NudityThis seems obviously un-tznius....
but what about Adam and Chava? Were they not considered naked before their sin? And clothing were part of their punishment...so therefore we can assume that nudity is the preferred dressed.
do you agree?why or why not?
I think someone wrote about this further down in the document but I always found this topic confusing. I have simply never understood why we must dress modestly when praying (in privacy, of course). G-d created us; He must know what we look like naked. And as a spiritual being, why would it make a difference to Him if we pray naked or dressed? Prayer is spiritual and our words should reach Him regardless of our physical attire. I know that we should approach Him like we would a king, but I find that analogy lacking because it implies that He would be offended or angry (like a king probably would be) if I approached Him in the way He created me...if He doesn’t like the way He created me, then why did He create me like that? If anyone has any explanations for this and Aviva’s questions above, I would be really interested to hear them.
I think of course he knows what we look like naked... but he created our bodies because they are special and we need to sanctify them. We want to show Hashem that we respect him so we should look presentable when we daven to him just as we would want to dress presentably when going on a date or going in public for that matter. I agree with this idea. It is a mindset. Like the previous comment suggested, it is just words and they should reached Him no matter what, however, can we possibly consentrate on what we are saying if we keep looking down and at ourselves and seeing our body parts (“how did that get there?”, “wonder what thaat is”, “I should really get a waxing” etc.) If we are dressed then we are less distracted (hopefully). Furthermore, when getting dressed our midnset is different. For every occassion we dress differently and our mindset is also different. For example, getting dressed for a wedding: your put on nice clothes, make up, jewlery and you get pumped to look nice and have fun. For a day in camp you put on short sleeves, shorts and tanktop, bathing suit and you get excited that you are gonna cool off in a nice pool or go for a run. Going to a funeral you dress respectfully and not in loud colors and get into the mindset set that someone dear to you is no longer in this world- they are gone forever.
I believe the way we dress affects our mindsets. if we want the right mindset for davening then we need to dress accordingly.
I think in the times of adam and chava there was no such thing as lack of respect maybe? So the whole naked bodies thing was not an issue... Adam and chava looked at each other’s neshamas when they looked at each other, not their bodies. Now we can’t help it.. so when we daven to Hashem we need to treat him like we would treat anyone else. Hashem look at my neshama, not my body... (even though Hashem obviously doesn’t care lol... but it’s the mentality that counts) if someone davened naked, i think they would feel pretty self conscious...after-all ur in front of the king... and in the end davening is for us to connect to Hashem... so to imagine we are talking to a king, we need to dress in a presentable fashion to express the respect we have for hashem.
