Exercise and Swimwear
Shorts & wife-beater? Long T-shirt? Bikini? You decide!
I believe our laws of modesty are un-wavering no matter whether the setting is a beach or a gym. As far as I know the halacha is to have the area between the hips and the knee including the knee covered in a way that does not reveal that there are 2 limbs. from after the knee to the foot however it can be covered in a way that DOES reveal that there are 2 limbs. My suggestion is a strechy/comfortable skirt to the knee on top of the gym pants....27
I agree. I think it is important that I be aware at what points I am applying my own subjective standards and trying to mold the torah into them. anything should be to what makes you feel comftorble not a matter of tznius. your bikini might give you self confidence a shirt and shorts make me feel more comftorble because of my acne but it used to be my weight but im doing better with that. -14
Are you talking about even swimming in all-girls hours? ...27
So you are saying that swimwear is a different category of clothing/dress and therefore is not part of Tznius? Do other people agree with this? Is sports/exercise-wear also different?
I started going to a secular all women's gym, but there's one male class instructor who's there some days and a FedEx guy who comes in sometimes to bring packages. I've been dressing 'mostly' tznius–i.e. wearing a knee length skirt over my leggings and a long sleeved shirt. BUT the neckline is big and loose, showing my collar bone and sometimes my sports bra strap. The sleeves creep up past my elbows etc.
On the one hand, I look like a nun since everyone is extra comfortable wearing revealing or unflattering outfits around women. On the other hands, my tznius standards are lower than in the street. It's kind of a conflict.
Since the men aren't a constant presence, what would I even tell people if they asked why I was dressed this way? (Age 26)
Well the question is really for you then, "why do you dress this way?" If you cannot answer that question to yourself then its best you and the rest of start thinking (add some thoughts/comments to our blog section: Why do you dress the way you do)
Is there a level of sensitivity you have no matter what? Do you cover your body because of any insecurities/unflattering areas? Or maybe you just are not used to dressing a certain way?
